Some of you know that I run an after school program, as 1/2 of my job. The goal is to increase the number of black youth in the California College system. There is a long story behind this work, but I won’t go into that in depth. Let’s just say that we are trying to close the achievement gap.

Part of the “Path to College” curricula that I have pulled together from various sources(no reinventing of wheels here) is a poem writing exercise called “Who AM I Poem” that I found at www.edchange.org (amazing website for educators and parents).

The challenge is getting 7th through 9th grade students to actually write a poem. They won’t try if they think they will fail. So, I have been searching for a technique to give them a simple way to start. I found it!!!

This website is hosted at a New Jersey educational site. It allows students to enter their own text into sentences that have preset beginnings. It offers them the head start they may need so that they do not get intimidated or scared to try.

This is the poem I came up with. Try it… 🙂

I Am

I am compassionate and patient.
I wonder what waits for us on the other side.
I hear a hummingbird singing my name
I see water wash over me.
I want to thrive by giving back.
I am compassionate and patient.

I pretend to be strong at all times.
I feel like my wings are tied down.
I touch the softness inside of people.
I worry that I will not be heard.
I cry when I feel invisible.
I am compassionate and patient.

I understand that I must surrender in order to move forward.
I say truth is freedom.
I dream of soaring through life on strong wings.
I try to think with my heart.
I hope that Spirit will guide my days.
I am compassionate and patient.

  1. Having a prompt does tend to make it easier for poetry novices. 🙂 Good resource!

Thanks. It actually inspired me to push to get back to my spiritual roots. 🙂

I stumbled on it searching for something for work. There are no accidents…as they say.

Lovely. I’m working on that too.

What’s interesting is that I did it twice. The first time was a little more superficial and trite. The second time, stuff started coming out that really showed me what’s going on in my heart.

Perhaps a good tool for getting in touch as well as poem writing, eh?
